Theremin

An electronic musical instrument controlled by hand movements near two antennas, without physical contact. One antenna controls pitch and the other controls volume.

Heterodyne: A signal-processing method that mixes two frequencies to produce their sum and difference. The theremin combines oscillator signals to create audible tones that shift with hand position.
Leon Theremin: A Russian inventor and musician who developed the theremin and other electronic devices. He created the instrument in the late 1910s and demonstrated it internationally.
Lucie Bigelow Rosen: An American thereminist and patron who promoted the instrument and supported Leon Theremin. Her performances and advocacy helped introduce the theremin to audiences in the United States.
The Day the Earth Stood Still: A 1951 science-fiction film directed by Robert Wise. Bernard Herrmann's score used theremin to give the film an uncanny electronic sound.
Ondes Martenot: An electronic instrument invented by Maurice Martenot, played with a keyboard or a ring on a wire. Like the theremin, it supports continuous electronic tones, but offers tactile playing controls.
Capacitance: A system's ability to store electric charge, determined by its geometry and surrounding materials. A player's hand changes the antenna circuit's capacitance and therefore its oscillator frequency.
Soviet Union: A socialist state that existed across Eurasia from 1922 to 1991. Leon Theremin developed and first presented his instrument in the early Soviet period.
Lydia Kavina: A Russian theremin virtuoso and composer who studied with Leon Theremin. Her concert career carried the instrument's classical tradition into contemporary performance.
Spellbound: A 1945 psychological thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Miklós Rózsa used theremin in its score to evoke psychological disturbance.
Electro-Theremin: An electronic instrument developed by Paul Tanner that imitates theremin-like pitch glides using a sliding control. It produces a similar sound but uses a physical slider rather than hands near antennas.
