Thermal power station

A facility that converts heat into electricity, usually by producing steam that drives a turbine connected to an electrical generator.

Rankine cycle: A thermodynamic cycle that converts heat into work through pressurized liquid, vapor, expansion, and condensation. It describes the steam cycle used in most conventional thermal stations.
Boiler: A vessel or system that transfers heat to water to produce steam. It supplies the high-pressure steam that can drive a turbine.
Coal-fired power station: A thermal power station that burns coal to produce steam and generate electricity. It is a major conventional design within the thermal-station family.
Power station emissions: Gases and particles released by power stations during operation, including greenhouse gases and air pollutants. Combustion-based stations release emissions that affect climate and air quality.
Steam turbine: A rotary engine that extracts energy from expanding steam to produce shaft power. Its shaft turns the generator in a steam-powered station.
Fossil fuel: A combustible material formed from ancient organic matter, including coal, oil, and natural gas. Combustion of fossil fuels supplies heat in many thermal stations.
Gas-fired power station: A power station that burns natural gas in a gas turbine, boiler, or combined-cycle system. Gas stations use combustion heat in several thermal conversion arrangements.
Carbon capture and storage: A set of technologies that captures carbon dioxide and stores it away from the atmosphere. It can reduce carbon dioxide releases from some fossil-fuel thermal stations.
Electrical generator: A machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy by electromagnetic induction. It converts turbine rotation into the station’s electrical output.
Combustion: A chemical reaction in which a fuel reacts with an oxidant and releases heat. It is the heat-releasing process in fossil-fuel-fired boilers.
