Thermogenesis

Thermogenesis is the production of heat by living organisms through metabolic processes, including muscle activity and cellular energy expenditure.

Brown adipose tissue: A type of fat tissue rich in mitochondria that produces heat, especially in newborns and cold-exposed mammals. Its mitochondria convert stored energy directly into heat rather than conserving it as ATP.
Thermoregulation: The physiological control of body temperature within a range compatible with normal function. Thermogenesis is one of the body's main ways to defend core temperature against cold.
Metabolism: The network of chemical reactions that sustain life by transforming matter and energy. Thermogenesis is heat released as part of metabolic energy transformations.
Vasoconstriction: Narrowing of blood vessels that reduces blood flow through them. It limits heat loss rather than producing new metabolic heat.
Uncoupling protein 1: A mitochondrial protein that dissipates the proton gradient as heat instead of using it to make ATP. UCP1 is the principal molecular switch for non-shivering heat production in brown fat.
Cold acclimation: Physiological adjustment to repeated or prolonged exposure to cold. Repeated cold exposure can increase non-shivering heat production in some mammals.
Thermodynamics: The study of energy, heat, work, and the transformations between them. Its energy accounting explains why metabolic conversion cannot capture all energy as useful work.
Insulation: A material or biological feature that slows heat transfer between a body and its surroundings. Insulation conserves existing heat, unlike thermogenesis, which generates it.
Shivering: Rapid, involuntary skeletal-muscle contractions that generate heat. Repeated muscle contractions raise heat production when cold defenses recruit movement.
Neonatal thermoregulation: The mechanisms newborns use to maintain body temperature despite limited heat-conserving and behavioral abilities. Newborn mammals rely heavily on brown-fat thermogenesis because they shiver less effectively.
