Therocephalia

Therocephalia is an extinct group of therapsids that lived from the Permian into the Triassic. Its members ranged from small insect-eaters to large predators and included forms with increasingly mammal-like traits.

Therapsida: Therapsida is a major group of synapsids that includes mammals and several extinct lineages. Therocephalia is one of the major therapsid lineages.
Temporal fenestra: A temporal fenestra is an opening in the skull behind the eye that accommodates jaw muscles. The synapsid temporal opening helped accommodate the jaw musculature of therocephalians.
Permian: The Permian is the geologic period from about 299 to 252 million years ago, preceding the Triassic. Therocephalians diversified during the Permian, before the end-Permian extinction.
Lycosuchus: Lycosuchus is an extinct therocephalian genus from the Permian of southern Africa. It represents an early therocephalian predator from the Karoo fossil record.
Biarmosuchia: Biarmosuchia is an early-diverging group of therapsids that lived during the Permian. Biarmosuchians branched earlier than therocephalians in therapsid evolution.
Synapsid: A synapsid is a member of the amniote lineage that includes mammals and their extinct relatives. Therocephalians belong to the mammal-line branch of amniotes.
Canine tooth: A canine is a pointed tooth used for gripping, piercing, or tearing food. Many therocephalians had prominent canines suited to seizing prey.
Triassic: The Triassic is the geologic period from about 252 to 201 million years ago, following the Permian. Some therocephalian lineages survived into the Triassic before the group disappeared.
Moschorhinus: Moschorhinus is an extinct therocephalian genus known from Permian and Triassic deposits in southern Africa. Its survival across the period boundary illustrates therocephalian persistence after the extinction.
Anomodont: Anomodonts are an extinct therapsid group that includes the herbivorous dicynodonts. Their mostly herbivorous adaptations contrast with the many predatory therocephalians.
