Thiosulfuric acid

Thiosulfuric acid is an unstable oxyacid with formula H₂S₂O₃, structurally related to sulfuric acid by replacing one oxygen atom with sulfur.

Sulfuric acid: Sulfuric acid is a strong diprotic mineral acid with formula H₂SO₄. Replacing one of its oxygen atoms with sulfur gives the structural relationship used to define thiosulfuric acid.
Acid–base conjugate pairs: A conjugate acid–base pair consists of two species differing by one proton. Loss of two protons from thiosulfuric acid yields the thiosulfate ion.
Sodium thiosulfate: Sodium thiosulfate is a water-soluble salt with formula Na₂S₂O₃, used in photography and chemical analysis. It supplies thiosulfate ions that form thiosulfuric acid upon acidification.
Dithionic acid: Dithionic acid is an unstable sulfur oxyacid with formula H₂S₂O₆. It contains two sulfur atoms but has a different oxygen count and sulfur–sulfur connectivity.
Thiosulfate: Thiosulfate is the polyatomic ion S₂O₃²⁻ and the conjugate base of thiosulfuric acid. Its salts are far more familiar and stable than the corresponding free acid.
Thiosulfate decomposition: Thiosulfate decomposition is the breakdown of thiosulfate species into simpler sulfur-containing products. Acidification of thiosulfate generates the unstable acid before rapid decomposition.
Iodometric titration: Iodometric titration is a volumetric method that measures oxidants through iodine liberation and titration with thiosulfate. Thiosulfate’s reactions make its salts central to this widely used analytical method.
Thioselenic acid: Thioselenic acid is an oxyacid containing sulfur and selenium, analogous in broad composition to thiosulfuric acid. Replacing sulfur with selenium illustrates how chalcogen substitution produces related acid formulas.
Oxyacid: An oxyacid is an acid containing oxygen, hydrogen, and another element, with acidic hydrogen often bonded through oxygen. Thiosulfuric acid belongs to this broad family of oxygen-containing acids.
Sulfur dioxide: Sulfur dioxide is a colorless gas with formula SO₂, produced by sulfur combustion and many sulfide processes. It is one of the products associated with thiosulfuric acid decomposition.
