Third Anglo-Dutch War

The Third Anglo-Dutch War was a naval and colonial conflict between England and the Dutch Republic from 1672 to 1674, fought within the wider Franco-Dutch War.

Battle of Solebay: A major naval battle fought off the Suffolk coast in 1672 between an allied Anglo-French fleet and the Dutch fleet. The war opened with this costly fleet engagement, which prevented an allied landing in the Dutch Republic.
Treaty of Dover: A secret 1670 agreement in which Charles II of England promised to support Louis XIV against the Dutch Republic. Its commitments helped draw England into war alongside France.
Dutch Golden Age: A period of exceptional economic, artistic, and scientific prosperity in the Dutch Republic, especially during the seventeenth century. The Republic’s survival preserved the political and commercial setting in which this flourishing continued.
Battle of Medway: A 1667 Dutch raid on the English fleet and naval installations in the River Medway. This Dutch success in the previous war sharpened English fears of Dutch naval power.
