Thomas Betterton

Thomas Betterton (c. 1635–1710) was an English actor and theatre manager, celebrated for his Shakespeare roles. He led the United Company and later managed the Lincoln’s Inn Fields Theatre.

William Davenant: An English poet, playwright, and theatre manager who helped restore public theatre after the English Civil War. Davenant trained Betterton and gave him an early path into professional theatre.
United Company: A London acting company formed in 1682 by the merger of the King's Company and the Duke's Company. Betterton became a leading actor and manager in this consolidated company.
