Knowra Thomas Cavalier-Smith Thomas Cavalier-Smith Thomas Cavalier-Smith (1942–2021) was a British evolutionary biologist whose research on eukaryotic cell evolution shaped influential, repeatedly revised classifications of life.
Eukaryote : An organism whose cells contain a nucleus and other membrane-bound compartments. His classifications organized the diversity of organisms with this cell type.
Six-kingdom system : A classification scheme dividing cellular life into six kingdoms, including the eukaryotic kingdoms Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, and Protista. Cavalier-Smith’s proposed kingdom systems became prominent alternatives to simpler classifications.
Lynn Margulis : An American biologist who developed and advocated the modern endosymbiotic theory of eukaryotic cell evolution. Her work on symbiogenesis addressed a central evolutionary process in his research.
Three-domain system : A classification dividing cellular life into Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. It differs from his kingdom-focused schemes in its highest-level divisions of life.
Endosymbiotic theory : The explanation that some eukaryotic organelles originated as free-living organisms incorporated into ancestral cells. It underpinned his accounts of mitochondria, plastids, and eukaryotic evolution.
Chromista : A proposed eukaryotic kingdom grouping organisms such as diatoms, brown algae, and oomycetes. He established Chromista as a kingdom to unite lineages with shared cellular features.
Robert Whittaker : An American ecologist who proposed a five-kingdom classification of organisms in 1969. His widely adopted framework provided a prominent alternative to Cavalier-Smith’s kingdom systems.
Opisthokonta : A eukaryotic group containing animals, fungi, and several related unicellular lineages. Molecular evidence supports this clade, challenging some of his proposed kingdom boundaries.
Mitochondrion : A membrane-bound organelle that generates much of the usable chemical energy in most eukaryotic cells. Mitochondrial presence and loss figured prominently in his proposed eukaryote relationships.
Archezoa : A proposed group of primitive eukaryotes thought to have diverged before mitochondria evolved. He introduced the group to represent a hypothesized pre-mitochondrial stage of eukaryote evolution.
