Thomas D. Rice

Thomas D. Rice (1808–1860) was an American actor and blackface performer whose Jim Crow character helped popularize minstrel shows in the nineteenth century.

George Washington Dixon: An American singer and blackface performer associated with early minstrel entertainment and the song “Zip Coon.” Dixon’s “Zip Coon” character became a counterpart to Rice’s Jim Crow in blackface performance.
Jim Crow (character): A blackface stage character created and performed by Thomas D. Rice, presented as a caricature of a Black man. This is the role through which Rice became famous and the name that outlived his performance.
