Thomas Schelling

Thomas Schelling (1921–2016) was an American economist and political scientist who used game theory to analyze conflict, bargaining, nuclear strategy, and social segregation. He received the 2005 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

Game theory: The mathematical study of strategic decisions among agents whose outcomes depend on one another. It supplied Schelling’s framework for analyzing bargaining, conflict, and strategic threats.
Nuclear deterrence: A strategy of preventing attack by threatening unacceptable retaliation. Schelling analyzed how threats and expectations could deter nuclear conflict.
