Thomas Szasz

Thomas Szasz (1920–2012) was a Hungarian-American psychiatrist and author who argued that mental illness is a metaphor for problems in living, not a literal disease of the mind.

Disease: A harmful condition of an organism, typically identified through signs of bodily dysfunction. His argument distinguishes bodily disease from diagnoses based on behavior or distress.
Paternalism: Interference with someone’s choices justified by the claim that it benefits that person. His liberty-based critique rejected paternalistic intervention in adults’ lives.
