Thomas Tallis

Thomas Tallis (c. 1505–1585) was an English Renaissance composer whose sacred vocal music includes the forty-part motet Spem in alium. He served under four Tudor monarchs while composing for both Catholic and Protestant worship.

Spem in alium: A forty-part motet by Thomas Tallis, scored for eight choirs of five voices. This monumental motet is Tallis’s most celebrated work and a striking feat of vocal composition.
Imitative counterpoint: A musical texture in which voices enter successively with related versions of the same melodic idea. Tallis uses imitation to bind independent vocal lines into coherent sacred music.
