Three Represents

Three Represents is a political doctrine associated with Jiang Zemin that says the Chinese Communist Party should represent advanced productive forces, advanced culture, and the fundamental interests of the people.

Jiang Zemin: Jiang Zemin was a Chinese Communist Party leader who served as China’s paramount leader from 1989 to 2002. He articulated the doctrine and made it a defining part of his political legacy.
Chinese economic reform: Chinese economic reform is the transition from a centrally planned economy toward a mixed economy begun under Deng Xiaoping in 1978. Reform created new productive forces and social groups the doctrine sought to incorporate.
Productive forces: Productive forces are the labor, skills, tools, technology, and resources used to produce goods and services. The first representation links the Party to forces advancing economic productivity.
Marxism–Leninism: Marxism–Leninism is a political doctrine combining Marxist class analysis with Leninist theory of the revolutionary party and state. The Three Represents broadened the Party’s stated social base beyond orthodox proletarian representation.
Chinese Communist Party: The Chinese Communist Party is the ruling political party of the People’s Republic of China. The doctrine defines the Party’s claimed social role and political legitimacy.
Deng Xiaoping Theory: Deng Xiaoping Theory is the official ideology associated with China’s reform and opening under Deng Xiaoping. The doctrine extended an ideological tradition that justified adapting policy to changing conditions.
Advanced productive forces: Advanced productive forces are the leading technologies, skills, and economic capacities driving productive development. This phrase names the economic constituency the doctrine says the Party represents.
Mao Zedong Thought: Mao Zedong Thought is the body of political ideas associated with Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communist revolution. Its revolutionary class emphasis contrasts with Jiang’s accommodation of new economic groups.
Party Constitution of the Chinese Communist Party: The Party Constitution sets out the Chinese Communist Party’s principles, structure, and rules. The doctrine entered the Party Constitution at the Sixteenth Party Congress in 2002.
Jiang Zemin's speech at the 80th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party: Jiang Zemin’s 2001 anniversary speech set out the Three Represents as a guiding principle for the Chinese Communist Party. This speech gave the doctrine its influential public formulation.
