Threshing

Threshing separates cereal grains from harvested stalks and seed heads by impact, rubbing, or mechanical action. It is distinct from winnowing, which removes lighter chaff from the grain.

Winnowing: Winnowing separates grain from chaff by using moving air to carry away lighter plant material. It follows threshing, separating loosened chaff from the grain.
Flail: A hand tool with a hinged striking part, used to beat harvested grain and release the kernels. It was a widespread tool for manual threshing before mechanized equipment.
Rice threshing: The separation of rice grains from harvested panicles by beating, rubbing, or machinery. Rice requires threshing methods suited to its clustered grain-bearing panicles.
Swing Riots: A wave of rural protests in southern and eastern England in 1830, driven by low wages, poor conditions, and agricultural change. Threshing machines became a target of protests over lost seasonal farm work.
