Throughput

Throughput is the rate at which useful data is successfully delivered through a system. It measures completed delivery over time, rather than the system’s theoretical capacity.

Bandwidth: Bandwidth is a system’s maximum data-carrying capacity, often measured in bits per second. It describes an upper limit, while throughput measures the data actually delivered.
Bit rate: Bit rate is the number of bits transmitted or processed per unit of time. Throughput is commonly reported as a bit rate over a defined interval.
Network throughput: Network throughput is the rate of data successfully transferred across a network path. It applies the general measure to end-to-end network delivery.
Throughput (computing): Computing throughput is the number of tasks or operations a computer system completes per unit of time. This broader usage counts completed work, not necessarily successfully delivered data.
Latency: Latency is the time delay between an action and its response or between sending and receiving data. Round-trip delay can constrain throughput when a sender must await acknowledgments.
Data rate: Data rate is the amount of data transferred or processed per unit of time. Throughput is a delivered-data form of this broader rate measure.
Disk throughput: Disk throughput is the rate at which a storage device reads or writes data. Storage systems measure completed data operations per unit of time.
Goodput: Goodput is the rate of useful application data delivered, excluding protocol overhead and retransmitted data. The distinction clarifies whether throughput includes overhead or only useful payload.
Packet loss: Packet loss occurs when network packets fail to reach their destination. Lost packets often trigger retransmissions that consume capacity and reduce useful delivery.
Network capacity: Network capacity is the maximum traffic a network or link can carry under specified conditions. It bounds achievable throughput but does not determine actual delivered traffic alone.
