Tianxia

Tianxia, literally “all under heaven,” is a Chinese concept of the world as a whole and an ideal political order grounded in moral authority and inclusive rule.

Mandate of Heaven: A traditional Chinese doctrine that rulers govern legitimately only while they retain Heaven’s favor through just rule. It supplies a moral basis for the authority Tianxia imagines extending across the world.
Zhou dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from roughly 1046 to 256 BCE and developed influential ideas of kingship and political legitimacy. The Zhou political order helped establish concepts later associated with Tianxia.
Tian: A Chinese term meaning “heaven,” with senses that include the sky, cosmic order, and a source of moral authority. Tianxia’s literal wording joins this source of order to the whole world.
Westphalian sovereignty: A model of international order centered on territorially bounded states with authority over their own affairs. It contrasts with Tianxia’s ideal of an encompassing order beyond separate sovereign states.
Confucianism: A Chinese ethical and philosophical tradition centered on cultivation, ritual, human relationships, and good government. Its account of virtuous rule shaped the ethical content associated with Tianxia.
Zuo Zhuan: An influential ancient Chinese historical narrative and commentary on the Spring and Autumn period. Its accounts preserve early uses of political language about rule and the wider world.
Zhongguo: The Chinese name for China, historically used with meanings including “central states” or “central realm.” Its shifting territorial meaning differs from Tianxia’s claim to encompass the whole world.
Nation-state: A political unit in which a state’s boundaries are understood to correspond to a national community. Its bounded membership differs from Tianxia’s aspiration to include the world.
All Under Heaven: An English rendering of the Chinese phrase tianxia, used for the world conceived as a political and moral whole. The phrase itself expresses Tianxia’s encompassing scope.
Spring and Autumn period: A period of political fragmentation in China, conventionally dated 770–476 BCE. Competition among states sharpened questions about legitimate authority and restored order.
