Tibesti Mountains

A volcanic mountain range in the central Sahara, located mainly in northern Chad and extending into southern Libya. Its high peaks and volcanic landforms rise sharply above the surrounding desert.

Emi Koussi: A shield volcano in the Tibesti Mountains and the highest peak in Chad and the Sahara. Its summit caldera crowns the range and marks the Sahara’s highest elevation.
Shield volcano: A broad volcano formed mainly by repeated flows of low-viscosity lava. Shield volcanoes account for major volcanic structures in the Tibesti massif.
Toubou people: A Central Saharan people whose communities include the Teda and Daza, with a long presence in Tibesti and surrounding regions. Toubou communities hold deep knowledge of the range’s routes, water sources, and settlements.
Trans-Saharan trade: The network of commercial routes that connected North Africa with regions south of the Sahara. Tibesti’s passes and settlements formed part of routes crossing the central Sahara.
Chad–Libya relations: The political and military relationship between Chad and Libya, shaped by border disputes and conflict. The range straddles a frontier affected by decades of Chad–Libya tensions.
Volcanic caldera: A large basin formed when a volcano’s summit collapses after magma is withdrawn. Calderas such as the one at Emi Koussi record major volcanic episodes in the range.
Basalt: A dark, fine-grained volcanic rock formed when low-silica lava cools at or near the surface. Basaltic lava flows contribute to the range’s volcanic landscapes.
Gustav Nachtigal: A German explorer and physician who traveled across parts of the Sahara and Central Africa in the nineteenth century. His travels and writings helped bring European geographical accounts of Tibesti to wider notice.
Pastoralism: A livelihood based on raising and moving livestock to find pasture and water. Seasonal grazing and water access have long shaped livelihoods around the mountains.
Toyota War: The 1987 phase of the Chad–Libya conflict, named for the light vehicles used by Chadian forces. Fighting in northern Chad brought international attention to the Tibesti region.
