Tibetan Plateau uplift

Tibetan Plateau uplift is the tectonic thickening and elevation of Tibet and surrounding regions, driven chiefly by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates.

Indian Plate: A tectonic plate carrying the Indian subcontinent and adjoining Indian Ocean crust. Its northward motion drives convergence with Eurasia and builds the Tibetan region.
Tibetan Plateau: A vast, high-elevation region of central Asia bounded by major mountain systems. It is the principal highland whose growth the uplift concept describes.
India–Asia collision: The prolonged tectonic convergence and collision between the Indian and Asian continents. Its timing establishes a lower bound for collision-driven deformation across Tibet.
Gangdese Mountains: An east–west mountain belt in southern Tibet, largely within the Lhasa Terrane. Its elevation and rocks provide evidence for the history of southern Tibet.
Stepwise uplift hypothesis: The hypothesis that major parts of Tibet rose in distinct episodes rather than through uniform continuous uplift. It challenges models in which the whole plateau rose steadily after collision.
Eurasian Plate: A major tectonic plate comprising most of Europe and Asia. Its southern margin accommodates the collision that thickens Tibet.
Himalayas: A mountain range formed along the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Their growth records convergence at Tibet's southern edge.
Indus–Yarlung Tsangpo Suture Zone: A geological boundary marking the former contact between Indian and Asian terranes in southern Tibet. Its rocks preserve evidence about the former ocean and the onset of continental collision.
Kunlun Mountains: A major mountain range along the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Their growth illustrates deformation extending far north of the Himalayas.
Distributed deformation: Tectonic strain spread across a broad region rather than concentrated along a narrow boundary. It offers an alternative to uplift models focused on a single advancing deformation front.
