Tidal river

A river whose water level and flow respond to ocean tides. Tidal influence can extend upstream from the river mouth, reversing or slowing the current.

Tidal bore: A wave front that travels upstream when an incoming tide enters a river or estuary. Some tidal rivers funnel a rising tide into a steep, fast-moving upstream wave.
Tidal flood: Flooding caused or amplified by unusually high ocean tides. High tides can raise river levels and inundate low-lying banks and settlements.
Amazon River: A major South American river whose mouth opens into the Atlantic Ocean. Its lower reaches produce the famous Pororoca tidal bore.
Non-tidal river: A river whose water levels and currents are not meaningfully controlled by ocean tides. It lacks the regular marine forcing that defines a tidal river.
Tidal range: The vertical difference between high tide and low tide at a location. Its size helps determine how strongly tides alter river levels.
Tidal locking: The use of a lock to let vessels pass between water levels that differ with the tide. Locks manage navigation where tidal levels and currents make passage difficult.
Qiantang River: A river in eastern China known for a large, rapidly advancing tidal bore. Its funnel-shaped estuary amplifies the incoming tide into a celebrated bore.
Estuary: A coastal water body where river water mixes with seawater and is influenced by tides. The tidal river often transitions into an estuary near its mouth.
Tidal prism: The volume of water entering or leaving a tidal basin between high and low water. This exchange helps govern currents through a tidal river's lower reaches.
Tidal barrage: A barrier across a tidal waterway that can generate electricity from the movement of tides. Tidal river flows can provide a site for harnessing tidal energy.
