Tigranes the Great

Tigranes II ruled Armenia from about 95 to 55 BCE and expanded it into a major power across western Asia before Rome curtailed his empire.

Artaxiad dynasty: The Armenian royal dynasty that ruled from the second century BCE into the first century CE. Tigranes inherited and enlarged the kingdom established by this dynasty.
Artavasdes I of Armenia: An Artaxiad king of Armenia who ruled before Tigranes II. Tigranes’s rise followed the reign of this earlier Armenian ruler.

Treaty of Artaxata: The settlement imposed by Pompey on Tigranes II in 66 BCE, ending Armenia’s expansion westward. It formalized Tigranes’s submission to Rome while leaving him as king of Armenia.
Appian: A Greek-language historian of the Roman Empire who wrote a narrative of Rome’s civil and foreign wars. His account preserves Roman-focused narratives of Tigranes’s conflict with Rome.
Seleucid Empire: A Hellenistic kingdom founded by Seleucus I, governing much of western Asia after Alexander the Great’s death. Tigranes took advantage of Seleucid weakness and briefly claimed its remaining Syrian territories.
