Tigris

The Tigris is a major river of Western Asia, rising in eastern Turkey and flowing through Iraq to join the Euphrates at the Shatt al-Arab.

Shatt al-Arab: A river in southern Iraq formed by the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates, flowing into the Persian Gulf. The Tigris ends as a distinct river where it joins the Euphrates to form this waterway.
Mesopotamian irrigation: The systems used to divert and distribute river water for farming in ancient Mesopotamia. Communities along the Tigris used its flow to sustain agriculture in an arid region.
Sumer: An ancient civilization of southern Mesopotamia, known for early cities and writing. Sumerian communities depended on the Tigris-Euphrates river system for farming and transport.
Tigris–Euphrates river system: The connected rivers and tributaries that drain much of Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and neighboring areas. The Tigris’s water supply and downstream course are inseparable from this shared basin.

Samarra Barrage: A barrage on the Tigris in Iraq that diverts floodwater toward Lake Tharthar. It redirects excess Tigris flow to reduce flooding downstream.
