Tiltmeter

A tiltmeter measures small changes in a surface’s or structure’s inclination. It is used to detect ground movement, structural deformation, and related changes over time.

Inclinometer: An instrument that measures the angle of an object or surface relative to gravity. Tiltmeters are a specialized form of inclination measurement, often optimized for continuous monitoring.
Volcano monitoring: The observation of volcanic activity using instruments that track changes such as seismicity, gas emissions, and ground deformation. Tilt changes can reveal magma movement and pressure changes beneath a volcano.
Gravity: The attraction between masses that gives objects weight and shapes their motion. Most tiltmeters use gravity as the reference direction for measuring inclination.

Angle: A measure of the separation between two intersecting lines or directions. Tilt is an angular quantity, usually reported relative to a reference direction.
Strain gauge: A sensor that measures deformation through changes in electrical resistance or another physical property. Strain gauges measure local stretching or compression rather than surface inclination.
Electrolytic tilt sensor: A tilt sensor that measures changes in electrical resistance or capacitance as electrolyte shifts inside a sealed cell. This sensor design converts small tilts into electrical signals for monitoring.
Structural health monitoring: The ongoing measurement and assessment of a structure’s condition to identify damage or changing performance. Tilt readings can expose gradual leaning or movement in monitored structures.
