Tim Minchin
Tim Minchin is an Australian comedian, actor, musician, and songwriter known for piano-based comedy and the musicals Matilda and Groundhog Day.
Matilda the Musical: A stage musical by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly based on Roald Dahl’s novel Matilda. Minchin wrote its songs and lyrics, bringing his comic wordplay to family musical theatre.
Musical comedy: Comedy that uses songs, music, or musical performance as a central part of its humor. Minchin’s comedy relies on songs as arguments, punchlines, and dramatic performances.
Dennis Kelly: A British playwright and screenwriter whose works include the book for Matilda the Musical. Kelly wrote Matilda’s book while Minchin supplied its music and lyrics.
Bo Burnham: An American comedian, filmmaker, and musician known for comedy songs and the special Inside. Burnham also builds comedy around songs, but often foregrounds digital performance and self-conscious staging.
Groundhog Day (musical): A stage musical with a score and lyrics by Tim Minchin, adapted from the 1993 film. Its score extends Minchin’s songwriting into a story about repetition and personal change.
Stand-up comedy: A live comic performance in which a performer addresses an audience, usually with prepared material. His piano songs sit within stand-up sets built around direct address and comic monologues.
Roald Dahl: A British author known for children’s books including Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Dahl’s novel provided the story adapted into the musical Minchin scored.
Weird Al Yankovic: An American musician and comedian known for parody songs and comic music videos. Yankovic makes parody the center of his musical comedy, unlike Minchin’s broader mix of satire and theatre.
So F***ing Rock: A 2008 live comedy album by Tim Minchin, recorded at the Sydney Opera House. The album captures his piano-led stand-up in a live performance.
Piano: A keyboard instrument that produces sound by hammers striking strings. The piano is the defining instrument in Minchin’s solo comedy performances.
