Timbuktu

Timbuktu is a historic city in northern Mali near the southern edge of the Sahara. It became a major center of trans-Saharan trade and Islamic scholarship, especially under the Mali and Songhai empires.

Tuareg people: The Tuareg are Amazigh-speaking peoples whose communities span the Sahara and Sahel. Tuareg pastoralists founded the seasonal camp that developed into Timbuktu.
Salt trade: The salt trade is the exchange of salt, a vital food preservative and mineral, between regions with unequal supplies. Saharan salt arriving by caravan was exchanged for goods from the south.
Sankore Madrasah: Sankore Madrasah is a historic center of Islamic learning in Timbuktu, associated with its scholarly golden age. Its teaching tradition made it one of the city’s best-known institutions.
Moroccan invasion of the Songhai Empire: The Moroccan invasion of the Songhai Empire began in 1591 and ended Songhai’s control of the Niger bend. The invasion weakened the political order that had supported Timbuktu’s prosperity.

Gold trade: The gold trade is the extraction and exchange of gold across local and long-distance markets. Gold moving north through Timbuktu helped draw merchants to the city.
Djinguereber Mosque: Djinguereber Mosque is a historic mosque in Timbuktu, built in the fourteenth century under Mansa Musa. The mosque embodies the city’s architectural and religious history.
Askia Muhammad: Askia Muhammad was a ruler of the Songhai Empire from 1493 to 1528 who expanded its administration and Islamic institutions. His reign strengthened Songhai’s Islamic institutions and Timbuktu’s scholarly standing.
Leo Africanus: Leo Africanus was a North African traveler and writer whose early sixteenth-century account described cities across West Africa. His account helped circulate descriptions of Timbuktu beyond the region.
