Time signature

A notational symbol that specifies how musical beats are grouped into measures and which note value represents one beat.

Numerator and denominator: The upper and lower numbers in a time signature, indicating beat count and beat-unit value. The upper number sets the measure’s count; the lower identifies its notated beat unit.
Note value: A symbol’s proportional duration in musical notation, such as a quarter note or eighth note. The denominator names a note value to serve as the beat unit.
Simple meter: A meter in which each beat divides naturally into two equal parts. Its beat subdivisions differ from those of compound meter.
Common time: The symbol C used to represent the 4/4 time signature. It is a conventional shorthand for one of the most frequent signatures.
Measure (music): A segment of musical time bounded by barlines and organized around a recurring beat pattern. A time signature specifies the rhythmic capacity and grouping of each measure.
Rhythm: The arrangement of sounds and silences across musical time. Time signatures provide a framework for notating rhythmic patterns.
Compound meter: A meter in which each main beat divides naturally into three equal parts. Its beat unit is typically a dotted note, unlike simple meter’s undotted beat.
Cut time: The symbol 𝄵, or C crossed by a vertical line, used for 2/2 time. It abbreviates a signature that groups two half-note beats per measure.
