Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste is a sovereign country occupying the eastern half of Timor, the nearby exclave of Oecusse, and the islands of Atauro and Jaco. It became independent in 2002 after Portuguese colonial rule and Indonesian occupation.

Portuguese Timor: The Portuguese colony that occupied the eastern part of Timor from the sixteenth century until 1975. Its colonial administration established the territory that became Timor-Leste.
Timor: An island in maritime Southeast Asia divided between Timor-Leste and Indonesia. Timor-Leste occupies the island’s eastern portion and a separate enclave on its western side.
