Timurid Renaissance

A period of artistic, architectural, and scientific flourishing under Timurid rule, especially in the fifteenth century, centered in cities such as Herat and Samarkand.

Timurid Empire: A Central Asian and Persianate empire founded by Timur in the late fourteenth century. The empire’s rulers and institutions provided the political setting for this cultural flourishing.
Gur-e Amir: The mausoleum of Timur in Samarkand, built in the early fifteenth century. Its monumental dome and tilework exemplify Timurid funerary architecture.
Ulugh Beg: A Timurid ruler and astronomer who governed Samarkand and sponsored scientific research. His observatory and star catalogue made him the period’s best-known scientific patron.
Ilkhanate: A Mongol dynasty that ruled much of Iran and neighboring regions from the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries. Its earlier Persianate court culture preceded and influenced Timurid artistic traditions.
Timur: A Central Asian conqueror who founded the Timurid dynasty and empire. His conquests created the dynasty whose successors became major cultural patrons.
Bibi-Khanym Mosque: A monumental mosque in Samarkand commissioned by Timur and constructed around 1400. Its immense scale shows the ambition of Timur’s architectural patronage.
Shah Rukh: A son of Timur who ruled much of the Timurid Empire from 1409 to 1447. His long reign supported the political stability and court patronage associated with the flourishing.
Safavid dynasty: An Iranian dynasty that ruled from 1501 to 1736 and established Twelver Shiism as the state religion. Safavid courts inherited and transformed artistic practices developed under the Timurids.
Herat: A historic city in present-day Afghanistan that became a major center of Persianate culture. Under later Timurids, Herat became a leading hub of courtly arts and scholarship.
Ulugh Beg Observatory: A fifteenth-century astronomical observatory established by Ulugh Beg in Samarkand. Its instruments and research made astronomy a prominent Timurid court pursuit.
