Tin(IV) oxide

Tin(IV) oxide, or tin dioxide, is an inorganic compound with formula SnO₂. It is a wide-band-gap semiconductor used in gas sensors, transparent conducting films, and ceramics.

Rutile: A tetragonal mineral form of titanium dioxide that shares the rutile crystal structure with tin dioxide. Tin(IV) oxide commonly adopts this same crystal structure, with tin and oxygen occupying corresponding lattice sites.
Chemoresistive gas sensor: A sensor that detects chemicals by measuring changes in a material's electrical resistance. Tin dioxide is a widely used sensing material whose resistance changes as gases react at its surface.
Gas sensor: A device that detects the presence or concentration of a gas. Tin dioxide is a common sensing layer for detecting combustible and toxic gases.
Tin(II) oxide: An inorganic tin oxide with formula SnO, in which tin has oxidation state +2. Unlike SnO₂, this oxide contains tin in the +2 oxidation state and has a different crystal structure.
Crystal structure: The ordered, repeating arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules in a crystalline solid. Its rutile lattice determines the coordination and pathways that shape tin dioxide's properties.
Gas adsorption: The accumulation of gas molecules on the surface of a solid. Adsorbed oxygen and target gases alter the surface charge and resistance of tin dioxide.
Transparent conducting oxide: An electrically conductive oxide that transmits visible light. Doped tin dioxide can serve as a transparent electrode in optoelectronic devices.
Cassiterite: The mineral form of tin dioxide and the principal ore of tin. Cassiterite is naturally occurring SnO₂ and the main mineral source of tin.
Semiconductor: A material whose electrical conductivity lies between that of a conductor and an insulator and can be controlled. Tin dioxide's conductivity comes from its semiconductor electronic structure and defects.
Oxygen ion: An oxygen atom carrying a negative electric charge after gaining electrons. Ionized oxygen species on heated tin dioxide surfaces capture electrons and set its baseline resistance.
