Tinplate

Tinplate is thin steel sheet coated with a thin layer of tin. The coating slows corrosion and provides a surface suited to soldering and food containers.

Electroplating: Electroplating deposits a metal coating on a conductive object by passing electric current through an electrolyte. Electroplating is a common way to apply tin to steel sheet.
Tin can: A tin can is a metal container, usually made from tinplate or aluminum, for storing food and other products. Tinplate is a traditional material for the body and ends of food cans.
Peter Durand: Peter Durand was an English merchant who patented a method of preserving food in tin containers in 1810. His patent helped create demand for tin-coated iron containers.
Terneplate: Terneplate is steel or iron sheet coated with a tin-lead alloy. It resembles tinplate but uses a different coating alloy and has distinct applications.
Hot-dip galvanizing: Hot-dip galvanizing coats steel by immersing it in molten zinc. It protects steel with zinc rather than tin and is used for different products.
Food packaging: Food packaging contains, protects, preserves, and conveys food from production to consumption. Cans made from tinplate are a durable form of food packaging.
Canning: Canning preserves food by sealing it in containers and heating it to destroy spoilage-causing microorganisms. The growth of canning drove tinplate’s adoption as a container material.
Aluminum can: An aluminum can is a container made primarily from aluminum sheet or alloy. It competes with tinplate cans while offering lower weight and different forming properties.
Galvanic corrosion: Galvanic corrosion occurs when electrically connected metals corrode at different rates in an electrolyte. Tin and steel form a coupled pair when moisture reaches exposed steel.
Soldering: Soldering joins metal parts by melting a filler metal whose melting point is below that of the parts. Tinplate’s tin surface can be soldered to form seams in containers.
