Tip of the red giant branch

The tip of the red giant branch is the characteristic maximum luminosity reached by low-mass red giant stars just before helium ignition, used to estimate distances to nearby galaxies.

Red giant branch: A phase of stellar evolution in which a star expands and brightens after exhausting hydrogen in its core. The tip marks the bright endpoint of this evolutionary branch.
Extragalactic distance scale: The framework of methods used to measure distances beyond the Milky Way. The tip provides one rung for measuring distances to nearby galaxies.
Cepheid variable: A pulsating star whose period of brightness variation is related to its intrinsic luminosity. Cepheids provide an alternative stellar distance indicator, especially for young populations.
Metallicity: The abundance of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium in an astronomical object. Metallicity changes red giant colors and can affect how the tip is identified and calibrated.

Interstellar extinction: The dimming and reddening of light as it passes through interstellar dust. Dust can make the observed tip fainter and redder than its intrinsic appearance.
