Knowra Tire Tire A tire is a ring-shaped component fitted around a wheel to support a vehicle’s load and provide traction, cushioning, and braking contact with a surface.
Pneumatic tire : A tire that uses compressed air in a cavity to support a load and cushion impacts. Air pressure and casing deformation govern how this common tire type carries weight.
Wheel : A rotating circular component that supports movement and transmits forces between an axle and a surface. A tire mounts on the wheel, which supports it and transfers its forces to the vehicle.
Bicycle tire : A tire designed for a bicycle, with dimensions and construction suited to cycling. Its low mass and narrow profiles serve a vehicle with little space and no engine.
Solid tire : A tire made from solid material rather than an air-filled cavity. It avoids punctures but gives up much of a pneumatic tire’s cushioning.
Aquaplaning : The loss of tire contact with a road when a layer of water separates them. Insufficient water evacuation can sharply reduce steering and braking control.
Tire tread : The patterned outer surface of a tire that contacts the road. Tread channels water and shapes traction, wear, and noise.
Tire pressure : The pressure of the air inside an inflated tire. Inflation changes the tire’s load capacity, footprint, handling, and heat buildup.
Winter tire : A tire designed to retain traction in cold conditions and on snow or ice. Its rubber compound and tread address conditions that reduce ordinary tire grip.
Tubeless tire : A pneumatic tire that seals directly against the wheel rim without an inner tube. Its air-retaining arrangement differs from tube-type tire construction.
Tire blowout : A sudden, major loss of tire pressure caused by a rupture or structural failure. Excess heat, damage, or inadequate inflation can lead to abrupt tire failure.
