Tisquesusa

Tisquesusa was the last independent zipa of Bacatá, a Muisca polity in present-day Colombia. He died during the Spanish conquest in 1537.

Bacatá: Bacatá was the Muisca polity ruled by the zipa in the Bogotá savanna. Tisquesusa governed this polity when Spanish forces entered its territory.
Sagipa: Sagipa was a Muisca ruler who succeeded Tisquesusa as zipa of Bacatá after the Spanish invasion. His contested succession followed Tisquesusa’s death.
Battle of Cajicá: The Battle of Cajicá was an early clash between Spanish forces and Muisca defenders during the 1537 invasion. It formed part of the campaign that drove Tisquesusa from his capital.

Quemuenchatocha: Quemuenchatocha was the Muisca hoa, or ruler, of Hunza when Spanish forces invaded the region. He ruled the neighboring Muisca polity during Tisquesusa’s final years.
Spanish conquest of Bacatá: The Spanish conquest of Bacatá was the capture of the Muisca capital by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada’s expedition in 1537. Tisquesusa fled as Spanish forces occupied his capital.
Bogotá: Bogotá is the capital of Colombia, founded by the Spanish as Santa Fe de Bogotá in 1538. The colonial city arose soon after the conquest of Tisquesusa’s polity.
Zipa: A zipa was the hereditary ruler of Bacatá, one of the principal Muisca polities. Tisquesusa held this office before Spanish conquest ended Bacatá’s independence.
Tundama: Tundama was a Muisca ruler who resisted Spanish forces in the northern highlands. His resistance provides a comparison with Bacatá’s response to the conquest.
