Tlaxcala

Tlaxcala was an independent Nahua polity in central Mexico that resisted Mexica expansion and allied with Spanish forces during the conquest of the Aztec Empire.

Nahua peoples: Indigenous peoples of central Mexico who speak or historically spoke Nahuan languages. Tlaxcala’s inhabitants belonged to Nahua-speaking societies with shared cultural and political traditions.
Altepetl: A Nahua city-state organized around a central settlement and its dependent communities. Tlaxcala’s constituent communities were altepetl with their own leadership and interests.
Xicohtencatl the Elder: A senior Tlaxcalan leader during the Spanish invasion of Mexico. He counseled resistance to the Spanish and represented a powerful strand of Tlaxcalan policy.
Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire: The campaign from 1519 to 1521 that ended Mexica imperial rule and established Spanish control in central Mexico. Tlaxcalan forces were among the Spanish expedition’s largest and most consequential Indigenous allies.
