Tōhoku region

Tōhoku is the northeastern region of Honshu, Japan, comprising Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima prefectures.

Aomori Prefecture: A prefecture at the northern tip of Honshu, known for apple production and the Tsugaru Peninsula. It forms Tōhoku’s northernmost reach and faces Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait.
Sendai: The largest city in the Tōhoku region and the capital of Miyagi Prefecture. Its population and institutions make it the region’s principal urban hub.
Emishi: A historical name used by Japanese states for peoples living in northeastern Honshu. Relations with the Emishi shaped early state expansion into Tōhoku.
2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami: A magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011. The disaster devastated coastal communities and reshaped the region’s recovery priorities.
Nebuta Matsuri: An annual summer festival in Aomori City featuring illuminated floats and processions. Its scale and imagery make it one of Tōhoku’s most recognizable festivals.
Iwate Prefecture: A prefecture on northeastern Honshu, with a Pacific coast and extensive mountain landscapes. Its large area and rugged interior illustrate Tōhoku’s varied terrain.
Matsushima: A bay in Miyagi Prefecture, famed for its many pine-covered islands. Its sheltered coastal scenery is among Tōhoku’s best-known landscapes.
Mutsu Province: A historical province covering much of northeastern Honshu, including areas of modern Tōhoku. Its boundaries and administrative history predate the modern prefecture system.
Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster: A nuclear accident triggered by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Its evacuations and long-term cleanup deeply affected Fukushima and national energy policy.
Kantō Matsuri: An annual Akita City festival in which performers balance tall poles hung with lanterns. It represents the distinctive festival traditions of Tōhoku’s Sea of Japan side.
