Tōhoku Shinkansen

A high-speed railway line running north from Tokyo through northeastern Honshu to Shin-Aomori. It is Japan’s longest Shinkansen line and connects with the Hokkaido Shinkansen at Shin-Aomori.

Shinkansen: Japan’s high-speed rail network, built around dedicated tracks and frequent intercity services. The Tōhoku Shinkansen is one of the network’s principal lines.
Japanese National Railways: Japan’s state-owned railway corporation, which operated the national rail network until its breakup in 1987. It planned and began construction of the Tōhoku Shinkansen.
Tokyo Station: A major railway terminal in central Tokyo and a principal hub of Japan’s Shinkansen network. It is the southern terminus for Tōhoku Shinkansen services.
2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami: A magnitude 9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami that struck northeastern Japan on 11 March 2011. The disaster halted Tōhoku Shinkansen services and prompted extensive inspections and repairs.
Hayabusa: A high-speed train service on the Tōhoku and Hokkaido Shinkansen lines. It provides the line’s fastest passenger service, continuing north onto Hokkaido.
Tohoku Main Line: A conventional railway connecting Tokyo with northeastern Honshu and Aomori. The new high-speed line was built to serve the same broad corridor with faster journeys.
Sendai Station: The main railway station in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, and a key Tōhoku Shinkansen stop. Sendai is the line’s largest urban center north of Tokyo.
Earthquake early warning system: A system that uses fast-arriving seismic waves to alert people before stronger shaking arrives. Early warnings trigger automatic train controls that can reduce Shinkansen speed before strong shaking.
Hayate: A limited-stop Shinkansen service operating between Tokyo and destinations in northern Japan. It is one of the named services using the Tōhoku Shinkansen.
Ōmiya Station: A major railway station in Saitama, north of central Tokyo. The first section opened between Ōmiya and Morioka in 1982, before the Tokyo extension.
