Tokhtamysh

Tokhtamysh was a ruler of the Golden Horde who reunited much of the Mongol khanate in the late 14th century before Timur defeated him.

Golden Horde: A Mongol successor state that ruled much of the Eurasian steppe and parts of Eastern Europe from the 13th to 15th centuries. Tokhtamysh became its khan and briefly restored its unity.
Jochid dynasty: The ruling lineage descended from Jochi, which governed the Mongol realms west of the central steppe. Tokhtamysh’s dynastic descent supported his claim to the khanate.
Siege of Moscow (1382): Tokhtamysh’s 1382 attack on Moscow, which ended with the city’s capture and burning. The siege restored Horde authority over Moscow after its defiance.
Grand Duchy of Moscow: A medieval East Slavic state centered on Moscow that expanded into a major power in northeastern Europe. Tokhtamysh’s campaign temporarily reasserted Horde supremacy over the principality.
Jochi: The eldest son of Genghis Khan and founder of the Jochid line that ruled the western Mongol territories. Tokhtamysh claimed authority through the Jochid dynasty.
Sarai: A major capital of the Golden Horde on the lower Volga River. Control of Sarai helped make Tokhtamysh’s rule over the Horde tangible.
Battle of the Terek River: The 1395 battle in which Timur decisively defeated Tokhtamysh’s forces near the Terek River. This defeat broke Tokhtamysh’s power in the western steppe.
Disintegration of the Golden Horde: The gradual breakup of the Golden Horde into successor states during the 15th century. Tokhtamysh’s defeats weakened the unity he had briefly restored.
Mamai: A powerful Mongol military leader who controlled much of the Golden Horde without being a member of Genghis Khan’s ruling lineage. Tokhtamysh’s rise challenged Mamai’s de facto rule.
Battle of the Kalka River: A 1223 Mongol victory over a coalition of Rus’ princes and Cuman forces on the Kalka River. The older steppe campaigns shaped the political legacy Tokhtamysh inherited.
