Tokugawa Iemochi

Tokugawa Iemochi was the fourteenth shogun of Japan’s Tokugawa shogunate, ruling from 1858 to 1866 during growing foreign pressure and domestic political conflict.

Tokugawa Iesada: The thirteenth Tokugawa shogun, whose death in 1858 triggered a succession dispute. His death opened the succession contest that placed Iemochi on the shogunal path.
Kōmei: The 121st emperor of Japan, who reigned from 1846 to 1867. His court’s alliance with Iemochi became a central strategy for restoring shogunal legitimacy.
Matsudaira Katamori: A daimyo who served as Kyoto’s military governor and supported the Tokugawa shogunate. His defense of shogunal interests in Kyoto connected local security to Iemochi’s regime.
