Tokugawa Ieyasu

Tokugawa Ieyasu was a Japanese military leader who founded the Tokugawa shogunate and established his dynasty’s rule over Japan. He served as shogun from 1603 to 1605, then governed through his son and successor.

Sengoku period: A period of civil war and political fragmentation in Japan, conventionally dated from the mid-15th to late 16th century. Its competing warlords created the conditions for Ieyasu’s rise.
Tokugawa shogunate: The military government that ruled Japan under Tokugawa shoguns from 1603 to 1868. Ieyasu founded this government and established its institutions.
Lady Saigō: A consort of Tokugawa Ieyasu and the mother of his son Tokugawa Hidetada. Her son became Ieyasu’s successor as shogun.
Sakoku: A label for Tokugawa-era policies that restricted foreign contact and Japanese travel abroad, especially from the 1630s. These later restrictions developed within the order Ieyasu founded, though they were not his policy.
Matsudaira clan: A Japanese samurai clan from Mikawa Province whose headship Ieyasu inherited before adopting the Tokugawa name. Ieyasu’s birth family supplied his regional base and early political identity.
Edo period: The period of Japanese history from 1603 to 1868, marked by Tokugawa rule and political stability. Ieyasu’s victory initiated the era associated with his dynasty.
Tokugawa Hidetada: The second Tokugawa shogun, who succeeded his father Ieyasu in 1605 and continued the dynasty’s rule. His succession was the key personal link in Ieyasu’s dynastic plan.
Siege of Osaka: The campaigns of 1614–1615 in which Tokugawa forces destroyed the Toyotomi stronghold at Osaka Castle. Ieyasu’s final campaigns eliminated the chief rival to Tokugawa dynastic rule.
Oda Nobunaga: A Japanese warlord who conquered much of Japan in the late 16th century and initiated its political unification. Ieyasu became Nobunaga’s ally and expanded his power as Nobunaga subdued rival domains.
Sankin-kōtai: A Tokugawa system requiring daimyo to alternate residence between their domains and Edo. This later policy constrained regional lords and strengthened the regime Ieyasu founded.
