Tokugawa Yoshinobu

Tokugawa Yoshinobu was the fifteenth and final shogun of Japan’s Tokugawa shogunate. He held office from 1866 until resigning in 1867, as political power shifted toward imperial rule.

Tokugawa Iemochi: The fourteenth Tokugawa shogun, whose death in 1866 left the office vacant. Iemochi’s death opened the succession that brought Yoshinobu to the shogunate.
Taisei Hōkan: Yoshinobu’s 1867 declaration returning governing authority to the emperor. This resignation ended the shogunate in principle but left control contested.
Matsudaira Shungaku: A reform-minded daimyo of Fukui who advised on national politics during the late Tokugawa period. He supported political arrangements that could preserve Yoshinobu’s role after the shogunate ended.
Meiji Restoration: The political transformation that ended Tokugawa rule and established a centralized government under the emperor. Yoshinobu’s resignation was a turning point in this transformation, though not its final settlement.
Tokugawa shogunate: The military government led by Tokugawa shoguns that ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. Yoshinobu inherited this government during its final political crisis.
Imperial decree to restore imperial rule: The January 1868 proclamation that established a new imperial government and abolished the shogunate. It countered Yoshinobu’s bid to retain influence after returning authority.
Shimazu Hisamitsu: A Satsuma leader who exerted major political influence despite not being the domain’s formal ruler. His political maneuvering helped build opposition to Yoshinobu’s government.
Edo Castle: The Tokugawa shoguns’ headquarters in Edo, later the site of Japan’s imperial palace. Yoshinobu surrendered the castle in 1868, avoiding a destructive siege of the capital.
Mito Domain: A domain in eastern Japan governed by a branch of the Tokugawa family. Yoshinobu was born into the Mito branch before being adopted into the Hitotsubashi family.
Boshin War: The 1868–1869 civil war between forces supporting the imperial government and the former shogunate. Conflict followed the political struggle over Yoshinobu’s resignation and status.
