Tokushima Prefecture

Tokushima Prefecture is an administrative region in northeastern Shikoku, Japan, bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Seto Inland Sea. Its capital is Tokushima City.

Awa Odori: A Japanese folk dance festival held in Tokushima, especially during the annual Obon celebrations. This large summer festival is the prefecture’s most widely recognized cultural event.
Shikoku: The smallest of Japan’s four main islands, lying south of Honshu. Tokushima occupies Shikoku’s northeastern corner.
Ōnaruto Bridge: A suspension bridge linking Naruto in Tokushima Prefecture with Awaji Island across the Naruto Strait. It provides a major road connection between Tokushima and the Kansai region.
Hachisuka Clan: A Japanese samurai family that ruled the Awa domain from the late sixteenth century until the Meiji Restoration. The clan established the political center from which modern Tokushima developed.
Naruto Whirlpools: Tidal whirlpools that form in the Naruto Strait between Tokushima and Awaji Island. The strait’s strong tides create one of Tokushima’s signature natural sights.
Tokushima City: The capital and largest city of Tokushima Prefecture, located near the Yoshino River delta. It is the prefecture’s administrative and urban center.
Akashi Kaikyo Bridge: A suspension bridge connecting Awaji Island with Kobe across the Akashi Strait. Together with the Ōnaruto Bridge, it completes a highway route toward Honshu.
Awa Domain: A feudal domain in eastern Shikoku governed by the Hachisuka family during the Edo period. Its territory largely corresponds to present-day Tokushima Prefecture.
Iya Valley: A steep, mountainous valley in western Tokushima, known for remote settlements and vine bridges. Its rugged interior contrasts with the prefecture’s coastal cities.
Awa Province: A former Japanese province corresponding roughly to modern Tokushima Prefecture. The historical name Awa remains present in local culture and institutions.
