Tokyo Bay

Tokyo Bay is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean on Japan’s eastern coast, bordered by Tokyo and neighboring prefectures. Its shores encompass one of the world’s largest urban and industrial regions.

Bōsō Peninsula: A peninsula in Chiba Prefecture forming the eastern side of Tokyo Bay. Its western shore defines the bay’s eastern boundary.
Tama River: A river flowing from the mountains of Yamanashi through Tokyo and into Tokyo Bay. It carries freshwater and sediment from western Tokyo into the bay.
Port of Tokyo: A major Japanese seaport serving Tokyo and handling international and domestic cargo. Its terminals occupy the bay’s northwestern shore and reclaimed waterfront.
Eutrophication: The excessive enrichment of water with nutrients, often causing algal blooms and oxygen depletion. Nutrient inputs have contributed to recurring water-quality problems in the bay.
Miura Peninsula: A peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture separating Tokyo Bay from Sagami Bay. Its eastern coast forms the bay’s southwestern boundary.
Arakawa River: A major river flowing through Saitama and Tokyo before reaching Tokyo Bay. Its drainage basin channels water from the northern Kantō Plain to the bay.
Port of Yokohama: A major international seaport on the western shore of Tokyo Bay. It helped make the bay a gateway for Japanese trade with the world.
Red tide: A discoloration of seawater caused by dense populations of certain microscopic algae. Algal blooms in the bay can harm fisheries and other marine life.
Uraga Channel: The narrow southern entrance to Tokyo Bay between the Miura and Bōsō peninsulas. This passage connects the inner bay to the Pacific Ocean.
Edo River: A river branching from the Tone River and flowing along the boundary between Tokyo and Chiba. It drains into the bay’s northeastern reaches.
