Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower is a communications and observation tower in Minato, Tokyo, completed in 1958. Its design draws in part on the Eiffel Tower.

Eiffel Tower: A wrought-iron lattice tower in Paris, completed in 1889 and designed by Gustave Eiffel’s engineering company. Tokyo Tower adapts the Eiffel Tower’s silhouette while using a different structure and serving a broadcasting role.
Television broadcasting: The electronic transmission of moving images and sound to television receivers. Broadcasting was the tower’s primary purpose when television expanded in postwar Japan.
Nippon Television City Corporation: The company established to build and operate Tokyo Tower. The company organized the project as Japan sought a central television-broadcasting tower.
Tokyo Tower broadcasting: The transmission of radio and television signals using Tokyo Tower’s antennas. Its broadcast role helped establish the tower as essential communications infrastructure.
Minato, Tokyo: A special ward in central Tokyo that includes commercial districts, embassies, and major landmarks. Tokyo Tower stands in Shiba Park within this ward.
Antenna: A device that transmits or receives electromagnetic waves. The tower’s antennas convert broadcast signals into electromagnetic waves sent over Tokyo.
Hisakichi Maeda: A Japanese businessman who led the project to build Tokyo Tower. Maeda championed the tower as a national broadcasting facility and symbol.
Tokyo Skytree: A broadcasting and observation tower in Sumida, Tokyo, completed in 2012. The newer tower assumed the principal digital television transmission role from Tokyo Tower.
Steel lattice tower: A tall structure made from interconnected steel members arranged in an open framework. This structural form gives Tokyo Tower strength with less material than a solid shaft.
Structural engineering: The design and analysis of structures that resist loads and remain stable. Engineers had to make the tall steel frame withstand wind and earthquakes.
