Tokyo

Tokyo is Japan’s capital and a metropolitan prefecture on the eastern coast of Honshu. It comprises 23 special wards, cities, towns, and villages.

Tokyo Metropolis: Japan’s first-level administrative division encompassing the 23 special wards and municipalities of western Tokyo. This prefecture-level unit is the formal territory commonly meant by Tokyo.
Tokyo Metropolitan Government: The elected government administering Tokyo Metropolis, led by a governor and metropolitan assembly. It coordinates prefecture-wide services alongside the autonomous special wards.
Edo: The former name of Tokyo, which grew from a castle town into Japan’s political center under the Tokugawa shogunate. The city’s premodern history and much of its urban structure began as Edo.
Tokyo Stock Exchange: Japan’s principal securities exchange, headquartered in Tokyo and operated by Japan Exchange Group. It anchors the capital’s role in Japanese finance and corporate governance.
Japan's postwar economic miracle: Japan’s rapid economic growth from the 1950s through the early 1970s after World War II. Tokyo’s industrial expansion and concentration of institutions helped drive this national growth.
Special wards of Tokyo: Twenty-three municipalities in eastern Tokyo, each with its own elected mayor and assembly. They form the urban core but are not ordinary city wards.
Tokyo subway: The urban rapid-transit network operated by Tokyo Metro and the Toei Subway. Subways connect dense central districts within the larger rail system.
Tokugawa shogunate: The military government that ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868, based in Edo. Its rule made Edo the country’s de facto political center for more than two centuries.
Tokyo Haneda Airport: A major international and domestic airport serving Tokyo, located south of central Tokyo. It connects the capital with Japanese cities and destinations worldwide.
Urban heat island: The tendency for built-up urban areas to be warmer than nearby rural areas. Tokyo’s dense construction and heat-retaining surfaces intensify summer temperatures.
