Tolstoyan movement

A pacifist Christian social movement inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s teachings on nonviolence, simple living, communal work, and resistance to state authority.

Leo Tolstoy: A Russian novelist and moral thinker whose Christian anarchist writings rejected violence, coercive government, and organized religion. His later writings supplied the movement’s central teachings and its name.
Simple living: A way of life that limits consumption and material dependence in favor of deliberate, restrained needs. Tolstoyans sought to reduce dependence on wealth and exploitation through modest living.
Tolstoyan colonies: Communities inspired by Tolstoy that pursued nonviolence, shared labor, and simple living. These communities made the movement’s ideals visible in organized daily life.
Mahatma Gandhi: An Indian political and spiritual leader who directed mass campaigns against British rule using nonviolent resistance. Gandhi corresponded with Tolstoy and drew on his arguments against violence and domination.
The Kingdom of God Is Within You: Tolstoy’s 1894 book arguing that Christian love requires nonresistance to evil and refusal of violence. This book became a foundational statement of the movement’s Christian pacifism.
Nonviolence: The practice or principle of avoiding physical force to pursue social or political aims. It names the broader practice underlying Tolstoyan refusal of violence.
Doukhobors: A Christian spiritual community originating in Russia whose members rejected Orthodox authority and, often, military service. Tolstoy supported Doukhobors facing persecution for refusing military service.
A Letter to a Hindu: Tolstoy’s 1908 essay arguing that love and nonviolent resistance could overcome oppression in India. Its exchange with Gandhi helped carry Tolstoy’s ideas into Indian anticolonial thought.
Christian anarchism: A political and religious tradition that rejects coercive authority on grounds drawn from Christian teaching. Tolstoyan resistance to state power belongs to this wider tradition.
Anarcho-pacifism: A political philosophy combining rejection of state authority with principled opposition to violence. It captures how Tolstoyan pacifism and anti-statism reinforce one another.
