Toluid Civil War

The succession war fought from 1260 to 1264 between Kublai Khan and his younger brother Ariq Böke after Möngke Khan’s death divided the Mongol Empire.

Kublai Khan: A grandson of Genghis Khan who ruled as Great Khan and founded China’s Yuan dynasty. He claimed the throne at a court in China and fought to defeat Ariq Böke.
Tolui: The youngest son of Genghis Khan and father of Möngke, Kublai, Ariq Böke, and Hülegü. The war takes its name from his descendants, whose branch contested the Great Khanate.
Hülegü: A son of Tolui who founded the Ilkhanate after leading Mongol campaigns in western Asia. His support for Kublai and absence in the west altered the balance between the brothers.
Yuan dynasty: A Chinese dynasty founded by Kublai Khan that ruled China from 1271 to 1368. Kublai’s victory enabled him to establish his dynasty and consolidate power in China.
Ariq Böke: A son of Tolui who contested the Great Khanate against his elder brother Kublai. His rival election at Karakorum turned the disputed succession into a war.
