Tomb

A tomb is a constructed place for burying human remains, often designed to preserve or commemorate the dead. It may be a chamber, vault, building, or rock-cut space.

Burial: The placement of a dead body in the ground or another resting place. Tombs provide constructed settings for burial rather than simple graves.
Tomb of Tutankhamun: The Egyptian royal tomb discovered largely intact by Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. Its preserved burial goods made it an exceptional case for studying an ancient tomb.
Rock-cut architecture: Architecture formed by cutting rooms, façades, or passages directly into natural rock. Rock-cutting creates tomb chambers without building them from separate blocks.
Neolithic long barrow: A long earthen mound, often containing a communal burial chamber, built in Neolithic Europe. These early monuments show communal tomb construction before historical states.
Ancestor worship: Religious practices that honor deceased ancestors and seek their continuing protection or favor. Some tombs support recurring rites that maintain bonds with deceased family members.
Funerary architecture: Buildings and structures designed for burial rites and commemoration of the dead. Tombs are one major form of architecture built for the dead.
Great Pyramid of Giza: The largest pyramid in Egypt, built as a royal tomb for the Fourth Dynasty pharaoh Khufu. It demonstrates how a royal tomb could take the form of a monumental pyramid.
Corbel arch: An arch-like structure made by stacking stones that project inward from each side. Corbeling allowed builders to roof some tomb chambers before true arches were common.
Mycenaean tholos tomb: A Bronze Age Greek beehive-shaped burial chamber built with a corbelled stone vault. Its monumental chamber illustrates a distinctive early form of elite tomb.
Afterlife: A realm or state of existence believed to follow death. Beliefs about the afterlife often shape what a tomb contains and how it is built.
