Tonga Trench

The Tonga Trench is a deep oceanic trench in the southwestern Pacific, formed as the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Tonga Plate.

Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone: A convergent plate boundary where the Pacific Plate descends beneath the Australian Plate system in the southwestern Pacific. The trench marks the deep-sea expression of this extended subduction boundary.
2018 Fiji earthquake: A magnitude 8.2 deep-focus earthquake beneath Fiji on August 19, 2018. Its exceptional depth and size were associated with the Tonga subduction system.
Hadakonda Seamount: A seamount in the Tonga Trench region investigated during deep-ocean exploration. Its exploration contributes direct observations from the trench’s extreme depths.
Kermadec Trench: A deep oceanic trench northeast of New Zealand, continuous with the Tonga Trench system. It extends the same subduction boundary southward.
Pacific Plate: The largest tectonic plate, consisting mostly of oceanic lithosphere beneath the Pacific Ocean. Its descent beneath the Tonga Plate creates the trench.
2009 Samoa earthquake and tsunami: A magnitude 8.1 earthquake and tsunami generated near the Samoa Islands on September 29, 2009. The event illustrates the destructive seismic hazards of the nearby Tonga-Kermadec boundary.
Hadal zone: The deepest part of the ocean, generally below 6,000 meters. The Tonga Trench is one of the principal environments within this oceanic depth zone.
Mariana Trench: The deepest known ocean trench, located in the western Pacific at the Mariana subduction zone. It provides a benchmark for comparing trench depth and subduction processes.
