Tongzhi Restoration

A mid-19th-century effort to restore Qing rule and strengthen state capacity after the Taiping Rebellion and other upheavals, during the Tongzhi Emperor’s reign.

Xiang Army: A regional army organized by Zeng Guofan to suppress the Taiping Rebellion. Its provincial organization and loyalist leadership helped restore Qing control where regular forces had failed.
Taiping Rebellion: A massive civil war in China from 1850 to 1864 led by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Its defeat created the urgent military and administrative reconstruction the restoration addressed.
Empress Dowager Cixi: A Qing imperial widow who exercised political power as regent and later as de facto ruler. She was a central court authority throughout the restoration period.
Zongli Yamen: A Qing government office established in 1861 to handle foreign relations and related affairs. It institutionalized the court’s response to foreign powers during the restoration.
Provincialism in late Qing China: The growing political and military influence of provincial authorities within the late Qing state. Regional armies that restored Qing rule also gave provincial leaders lasting leverage.
Huai Army: A Qing military force organized by Li Hongzhang in Anhui during the Taiping Rebellion. It became a major instrument of post-rebellion security and state rebuilding.
Second Opium War: An 1856–1860 conflict between Qing China and Britain and France that ended with expanded foreign privileges. Its defeat exposed Qing weaknesses and intensified pressure for military and diplomatic reform.
Prince Gong: A Qing prince and statesman who led the Zongli Yamen and helped manage foreign relations. His court influence and diplomacy were central to the post-1861 political settlement.
Jiangnan Arsenal: A Qing government arsenal founded in Shanghai in 1865 to produce weapons and translate Western technical works. It embodied efforts to build modern military production and technical knowledge.
Late Qing reforms: A series of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century efforts to reform Qing institutions and strengthen the dynasty. The restoration preceded later reform programs without resolving the state’s central weaknesses.
