Top of the Pops

Top of the Pops was a British music television program featuring performances and videos of popular songs, usually organized around the UK singles chart.

UK Singles Chart: A weekly ranking of the United Kingdom’s best-selling singles, later incorporating additional measures of listening and sales. The program used its weekly positions to structure the songs and acts it featured.
Johnnie Stewart: A BBC producer who created and produced Top of the Pops in its early years. Stewart devised the program’s initial chart-led format and oversaw its launch.
Jimmy Savile: A British radio and television presenter who hosted the first edition of Top of the Pops. Savile presented the program’s debut in 1964 and became one of its best-known hosts.
British Invasion: The mid-1960s surge of British popular musicians into the United States music market. The show regularly presented British acts whose international success formed part of this broader movement.

Bill Cotton: A BBC television executive and producer who helped develop popular-entertainment programming. Cotton supported the commissioning and early development of the program.
Tony Blackburn: A British radio and television presenter who hosted Top of the Pops during its early years. Blackburn was among the presenters who helped establish the show’s rotating-host format.
Music promotion: Activities used to attract attention to music releases, performers, and live events. A television appearance could expose a single to a national audience and support its sales.
The Chart Show: A British television program that presented singles-chart positions through music videos and graphics. It foregrounded videos and chart countdowns rather than studio performances by visiting acts.
