Topiary

Topiary is the horticultural art of clipping and training living plants into defined ornamental shapes. It uses repeated pruning to create and maintain geometric forms, figures, and other designs.

Pruning: The selective removal of plant parts to shape growth, improve health, or control size. Repeated cuts direct new growth and preserve topiary outlines.
Boxwood: A group of evergreen shrubs and small trees in the genus Buxus, often used for clipped forms. Its dense foliage and tolerance of frequent clipping suit formal topiary.
Ancient Roman gardens: Gardens in Roman society, ranging from household courtyards to elaborate landscaped estates. Roman writers describe clipped ornamental shrubs as a feature of cultivated gardens.
Parterre: A level garden area divided into ornamental beds, often arranged in symmetrical patterns. Low clipped plants can outline the intricate beds of a parterre.
Bonsai: The cultivation of miniature trees in containers through pruning, wiring, and careful root management. Bonsai shapes an individual miniature tree, while topiary usually clips a plant into an ornamental outline.
Apical dominance: A growth pattern in which a plant's main stem suppresses the development of lateral buds. Removing shoot tips can encourage side growth that fills out a clipped shape.
Yew: An evergreen conifer in the genus Taxus, valued in gardens for its dense foliage and pruning tolerance. Yew can form substantial shapes and recover from hard pruning.
Pliny the Younger: A Roman author and senator whose letters describe social life and villas in the first and second centuries CE. His letters mention ornamental garden forms associated with Roman topiary.
Knot garden: A formal garden design in which clipped plants create interlaced patterns resembling knots. Topiary techniques keep the planted lines of a knot garden sharply defined.
Espalier: The training of a woody plant to grow flat against a wall or support in a planned pattern. Espalier directs branches across a plane rather than forming a three-dimensional ornamental mass.
